Verona Quartet to resume Slee Beethoven String Quartet Cycle

Published March 19, 2025

This season’s Slee Beethoven String Quartet Cycle resumes on March 27 with a performance by the internationally acclaimed Verona Quartet.

The quartet will take the stage in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall for Concert IV at 7:30 p.m.

The program:

  • String Quartet in F minor, Op. 95 “Serioso”
  • String Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 18, No. 6
  • String Quartet in A minor, Op. 132

Tickets are $20. Advance tickets can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com  , at the Center for the Arts box office from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, and at the Slee Hall box office an hour before the concert. UB students are entitled to one complimentary ticket — to this and all UB music department concerts — and may pick up their ticket right before the concert.

With distinctive artistry and profound interpretations, the Verona Quartet has earned a reputation as one of the leading string quartets of its generation — The New York Times calls the quartet an “outstanding ensemble ... cohesive and full of temperament.”

The ensemble will return to UB next month to finish the cycle. Concert V is set for April 10 and Concert VI will be performed on April 11. The quartet will also lead a master class on April 11.

UB may be the only place in the country — or the world, according to Department of Music staff — that presents all 16 Beethoven string quartets annually.

The annual presentation of the cycle was established at UB during the 1950s by the estate of Frederick and Alice Slee.

UB’s presentation is also unique in that ensembles appearing in the series cannot dictate the order in which they present the individual quartets: The Slees’ bequest stipulates the order in which the quartets are to be performed.
