A first-of-its-kind study has measured the toxicity of several types of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), better known as “forever chemicals,” when mixed together in the environment and in the human body. The good news: Most of the tested chemicals’ individual cytotoxicity and neurotoxicity levels were relatively low. The bad news: The chemicals acted together to make the entire mixture toxic.

The Buffalo News published a story on how Erie County's online COVID-19 dashboard will start displaying charts that track COVID-19 in area wastewater.
Since fall of 2020, the Health Department has worked with UB researchers to analyze samples of wastewater from local water treatment plants to track the presence of virus fragments, the News reports. These monitoring efforts are led by Ian Bradley and Yinyin Ye. Both are assistant professors in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, and Bradley is also a core faculty member in the UB RENEW Institute.
