A reminder about e-scooters

UB officials want to remind members of the university community that electric scooters are prohibited on campus sidewalks, green space and inside university buildings.

UB recently amended its Student Code of Conduct (Article 3 - page 14) to restrict the use of e-scooters on campus grounds to ensure the safety of both riders and pedestrians.

As self-propelled scooters have grown in popularity over the past several years, UB has fielded complaints about students riding the scooters in buildings and on campus sidewalks, as well as the speed at which some are traveling — potentially causing serious injury to themselves or pedestrians.

The potential safety hazards of storing and charging a scooter’s lithium-ion battery in campus buildings and residence halls is a concern, as well.

UB officials also want to caution those who travel to and from campus on scooters to be safe and abide by the rules of the road:

  • Do not ride on public sidewalks.
  • Ride in the bike lane or to the side of the road.
  • Obey traffic signals and signs.
  • Yield to pedestrians and do not travel in excess of 15 mph.
  • And, of course, wear a helmet.
