In conjunction with its current exhibition “Transmutation: Photographic Works by Carl Chiarenza,” the UB Anderson Gallery will hold a “New Poets, New Books” event on Feb. 9 featuring Buffalo-based poets, including UB alumni and students, who will present work from their newly published books of poetry.
The free event, which will run from 1-5 p.m. in the gallery at One Martha Jackson Place off Englewood Avenues near Kenmore Avenue, will introduce a number of emerging poets to a larger audience.
It will begin at 1 p.m. with a tour of the “Transmutation” exhibition of black-and-white abstract photographs led by the artist, who is artist-in-residence and Fanny Knapp Allen Professor Emeritus of Art History at the University of Rochester. Exhibition curator Robert Hirsch, an artist and photography historian, will offer a few introductory remarks.
Following the tour at 2 p.m., Chiarenza will read his own poetry, as well as a poem composed by his daughter. Also reading their work will be poets Michael Basinski, Edric Mesmer, Claire Gay and Lauren Gay.
Refreshments will be provided from 3-4 p.m., and representatives from five presses—BlazeVOX Buffalo Ochre Papers, Habenicht Press, POPpress and PressBoardPress—will have books available for sale.
The event will close with more readings by poets David Hadbawnik, Geoffrey Gatza, Isaac Johnson, Patrick Riedy and Letson Williams.
The event is sponsored by the UB Art Galleries, the Poetry Collection of the University Libraries and the Mildred Lockwood Lacey Fund for Poetry, administered by the Poetry Collection.
