Clarinetist Raphaël Sévère, a prize winner in five international competitions when he was only 12 years old, will perform with pianist Paul Montag in a recital on March 24 at UB.
The recital, presented by the Department of Music, will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Baird Recital Hall, 250 Baird Hall, North Campus.
Sévère also will host a master class at 1 p.m. March 25 in Baird Recital Hall. The class is free and open to the public.
Tickets for the concert are $15 for the general public and $10 for UB faculty/staff/alumni, seniors and non-UB students. UB students are free with a valid ID. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Center for the Arts box office, online at tickets.com or one hour before the concert at the Baird box office.
The concert program includes the work of Brahms, Boulez, Debussy, Hindemith and Poulenc.
Sévère made his first solo appearance in China at age 11, playing Mozart’s clarinet concerto for the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birthday with the Macao Youth Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Yu Feng, artistic director of the Beijing Opera Orchestra.
A year later, he won prizes at five international competitions, including first prize at the Japan Clarinet Society competition in Tokyo
At age 15, he became the youngest French artist nominated as “Solo instrumental discovery” at the Victoires de la Musique Classique.
He went on to the prestigious competition of Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York in 2013, where he was awarded First Prize and eight special prizes.
