The spring concert of the Zodiaque Dance Ensemble, one of UB’s resident student dance companies, will take place April 17-19 in the Black Box Theatre in the Center for the Arts, North Campus.
Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
The concert, directed by faculty members Kerry Ring and Anne Burnidge, will showcase the diversity of two guest artists, faculty choreography and mentored student works. Guest choreography by Kendra Portier and Daniel Gwirtzman, both New York City-based dance artists, will be accompanied by dance faculty Jeanne Fornarola and Anne Burnidge. In addition, advanced choreography students Becca Corbin, Lexi Julian, Fallon Martin and Sammi Pfieffer will present new works.
The company, consisting of 28 undergraduate dance majors, will embody a spectrum of current dance styles, ranging from jazz to tap to post-modern contact improvisation.
Gwirtzman’s “Encore” is a dynamic jazz dance set to the music of the Dorsey Brothers that premiered at the Joyce Soho in 2007. Other works take inspiration from a variety of sources, including the political impact of our dwindling water resources, a study of “selfies” and humanistic explorations of relationships and afterlife.
Tickets are $20 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors. They may be obtained at the CFA box office and at tickets.com.
