Members of the UB community who travel to the North Campus via Interstate 990 may want to allow for extra time for the trip — or take an alternate route — due to an upcoming construction project on the road near the North Campus.
The New York State Department of Transportation plans to restart a construction project on the I-990 between Interstate 290 and North French Road on March 13. The project, which is expected to be completed by the end of November, will include reconstruction of areas on either side of all of the bridges between I-290 and North French; repair of deteriorated pavement; replacement of guiderails and signage; and milling, repaving and new striping of the roadway.
The project will necessitate some lane closures and ramp closures; detours will be posted for the ramp closures. The majority of the construction work will take place during daytime hours, although some night work will be scheduled.
Drivers should note that beginning March 13, the speed limit on I-990 will be reduced to 55 miles per hour, in both directions, from I-290 to North French Road; state police will be aggressively enforcing the work zone speed limits around the clock.
