Buffalo News reporter Jerry Zremski and photographer Derek Gee will discuss their experiences reporting on the lives of refugees from Burma during “From Burma to Buffalo,” a presentation sponsored by the School of Social Work’s Immigrant and Refugee Research Institute.
Zremski and Gee, who spent 20 months reporting the series of stories detailing the arrival of more than 8,000 Burmese refugees in Buffalo, also will discuss how the Trump administration’s stance on immigration and refugees will affect refugees in the resettlement program.
Their talk will take place from 3:30-5:30 p.m. April 12 in 403 Hayes Hall, South Campus. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
Those wishing to attend should RSVP. For further information contact Isok Kim, assistant professor in the School of Social Work.
I remain enduringly proud that four UB freshmen with whom I worked way back in 2012 through the UB Civic Engagement Academy had early contact with this important issue.
They've since graduated and are doing well: I've lost touch with psychology major Paris Canty, who before he left UB was president of a campus LGBTQ group, but WNY Prosperity Scholar Margaret "Maggie" Murray works at the Connecticut Street Armory, Dylan Steed works for Americorps and Kaitlin Landolf is a graduate student in the UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
