UB is planning and participating in activities from Sept. 10-16 to mark Suicide Prevention Week. Here are some of the offerings.
- Out of the Darkness Walk for Suicide Prevention. It will be Saturday, Sept. 9, at 10:30 a.m. (registration begins at 8:30 a.m.) at Delaware Park (near Buffalo Zoo). Join the UB Walkin’ Team, create your own team, or make a donation at www.afsp.org/buffalo.
- Wellness Activity Day. It will be Tuesday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. at the Student Union Lobby. It will include mindful self-care art activity, yoga, a nutrition demonstration, mental health awareness resources, and games and prizes.
- Suicide Prevention Week Active Minds Speaker: Pablo Campos “Flying Under the Radar”. It will be Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. at the Student Union Theater. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Campos will discuss his mental health concerns, polysubstance abuse and suicide attempt. He’ll also discuss the challenges he endured surrounding the norms of Guatemalan and U.S. cultures and assimilation.
- Suicide Prevention Training: Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR). It will be Friday, Sept. 15, from 10 a.m.–noon at Student Union 210. This training assists participants in learning to recognize the warning signs of suicide and ways to effectively help someone in need. Register online at www.buffalo.edu/studentlife/counseling.
