Members of the public attending the speech by former Vice President Joseph Biden at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Alumni Arena should plan to arrive early due to standard security measures in place for Biden’s appearance. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for ticketed patrons.
Prior to doors opening, the venue will be subjected to a security sweep to ensure the safety of all those in attendance. No backpacks or large bags will be allowed into the arena. All attendees will be required to pass through metal detectors and all coats and small bags will be searched.
The university is implementing significant security measures used during visits by very prominent guest speakers to campus, and also will be taking extra precautions because of recent targeting of political figures.
“The patience of the attendees is appreciated as they enter the venue,” says William J. Regan, director of university events. “We are not expecting any issues.”
Attendees are advised to arrive early.
Approximately 6,500 people are expected to attend Biden’s speech, part of UB’s annual Distinguished Speakers Series, which for the past 30 years has brought to the university prominent authors, scientists, activists and politicians to discuss cultural and societal issues.
More information about UB’s Distinguished Speakers Series is available at the University Events website.
