The Department of Theatre and Dance will present the 1972 musical “Pippin” Oct. 18-28 in the Drama Theatre in the Center for the Arts, North Campus.
Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
“Pippin” was originally directed and choreographed by the legendary Bob Fosse, with music by Stephen Schwartz, who composed “Wicked” and “Godspell.” The story follows Pippin, a young prince, as he searches to discover meaning and significance, and what it means to lead an extraordinary life.
UB’s production of “Pippin” will be directed by guest director and choreographer Paul Stancato, an award-winning director, choreographer and show maker whose Broadway credits include “The Wedding Singer.” Stancato also has directed national tours of “The Lion King,” “Jekyll & Hyde” and “Flashdance.”
Nathan R. Matthews, UB associate professor and director of music theatre, is the production’s music director. Matthews has worked on Broadway, across North America and abroad. He is a contributing author to the “Oxford Handbook of Sondheim Studies,” and is founding producing artistic director of New York’s Riverside Opera Ensemble, where he has developed and produced new works of musical theatre.
In Western New York, Matthews has music directed/conducted at UB, Irish Classical Theatre Company, Kavinoky Theatre, MusicalFare Theatre and at Artpark.
The cast and designers for “Pippin” are students from the Department of Theatre and Dance.
