There’s some sad news to report on the UB wildlife front this week. A fully fledged female peregrine falcon was found deceased on Winspear Avenue, UB Sustainability reported.
The falcon was this year’s female eyas from the MacKay Heating Tower nesting site. There were three eggs laid this spring, but only two were viable, which leaves one fledgling left, according to Erin Moscati, sustainability education manager with UB Sustainability.
Staff from UB Police and Environment, Health and Safety assisted in removing the bird and providing it to the state Department of Environmental Conservation, which will perform a necropsy to determine how the falcon died.
UB’s Falcon Cam is still active. The one egg that is still visible was from the first clutch and is nonviable.
