Poet and novelist Javier Ávila will present his one man show, “The Trouble With My Name,” an autographical journey of a man who moves between cultures, on Oct. 11 in the Center for the Arts as part of UB’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

The performance will take place at 6 p.m. in the Screening Room in the Center for the Arts, North Campus.

Ávila’s performance provides an interesting perspective of American Latinos who struggle to dispel misconceptions about their identity and place in the world.

Ávila is a professor of English who writes in both English and Spanish. He has received numerous awards for his work, most recently the Cultural Arts Award from the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education. In 2015, he was named Pennsylvania’s Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation, which inspired him to take his message of unity and inclusion on the road with his one-man show.

Ávila’s performance is presented by UB in collaboration with the Hispanic Heritage Council and the Buffalo State West Side Promise Neighborhood. UB co-sponsors include the Office of Inclusive Excellence, College of Arts and Sciences, Intercultural and Diversity Center, Latin American Student Association, and Latin American Law Student Association.
