Members of the UB community can sign up to be organ donors at an organ donor registry drive on April 19 organized by Campus Health Educators in UB’s Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP).
The drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Student Union lobby. There also will be food, giveaways, music and games at the event.
The organ registry drive is the culmination of a service-learning course presented by CSTEP in partnership with ConnectLife, a community blood bank and federally designated not-for-profit organ procurement organization.
The goal of the course, organizers say, is to increase the number of organ donor registry members by creating awareness and educating campus peers and the Buffalo community.
According to ConnectLife, more than 100,000 individuals in the U.S. are waiting for an organ transplant. Approximately 18 people who are waiting for an organ die each day, while about 150 people are added to the transplant list every day. One organ donor can save as many as eight lives; one tissue donor can enhance the quality of life for up to 75 people, ConnectLife says.
