The Center for 21st Century Music in the Department of Music is presenting two free concerts this month — one that spotlights a featured guest in the music department this semester, and another that pays tribute to a late faculty member.
The first program, a solo saxophone recital by featured guest Kyle Hutchins, a faculty member at Virginia Tech University, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16 in Baird Recital Hall, 250 Baird Hall, North Campus. It will feature the music of Leah Reid, Ted Moore, Elizabeth A. Baker, UB composer Cort Lippe and UB alumnus Barry Moon.
Then, at 3 p.m. Nov. 18 in Baird Recital Hall, UB faculty members will join forces with UB alumna Amy Williams, currently a member of the composition faculty at the University of Pittsburgh, to present a program in honor of the late UB composer and pianist Yvar Mikhashoff, who taught at the university from 1973 until his death in 1993.
The program, titled “Songs and Dances of Yvar,” will celebrate Mikhashoff’s legacy with original works and transcriptions performed by the Frisof/Pesca flute and piano duo, as well as UB faculty, students and alumni. The program will feature all compositions by Mikhashoff, with the exception of “Thorn-Torn Lips” by Bob Berkman.
