Faculty, staff and students are invited to gather on campus to view the total solar eclipse, a rare astronomic event that will occur in Western New York at about 3:18 p.m. on April 8 .

Viewing parties will take place at Founders Plaza on the North Campus and at a to-be-determined location on the South Campus There will be snacks and music at both events, as well as eclipse glasses and instruction on how to safely view the eclipse.

A total solar eclipse happens when the moon completely blocks the face of the sun. People viewing the eclipse from locations in the “path of totality” will experience a total solar eclipse. The sky will darken, as if it were dawn or dusk, which lasts for about 3-4 minutes.

“The total solar eclipse has generated tremendous anticipation and excitement across our region,” says President Satish K. Tripathi. “With Buffalo on the eclipse centerline — and weather permitting — we will be treated to an awe-inspiring view of one of the most spectacular phenomena in nature.”

The campus events are not open to the community or those traveling from outside of the area to view the eclipse.

It’s not safe to look directly at the sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing. UB will be distributing glasses across all three campuses prior to the event. Learn more about total solar eclipse safety.

Campus will remain open, and classes and activities will be held as scheduled that day. University Police and Erie County Emergency Management are coordinating on possible travel impacts.
