The Slee Sinfonietta, UB’s professional chamber orchestra in residence, and renowned flutist Carol Wincenc will perform in a concert showcasing Chinese-American composers on April 16.

The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, North Campus.

The concert will showcase the influence of Chinese-American composers on contemporary classical, chamber and orchestral works, along with the virtuosity displayed by Wincenc, an impeccable flute soloist. The first piece in the program, Su Lian Tan’s “Autumn Lute Song,” will also feature the erhu, a two-stringed bowed instrument known in the Western world as the “Chinese violin.”

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster, at the Center for the Arts box office from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and at the Slee Hall box office an hour before concert time. UB students with a valid ID receive one complimentary ticket and may pick it up at the box office right before the concert.

The Slee Sinfonietta, which is also the flagship ensemble of the Robert and Carol Morris Center for 21st Century Music, presents a series of concerts each year of challenging new works by contemporary composers and lesser-known works from the chamber orchestra repertoire.

Founded in 1997 by SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus David Felder, and comprised of a core group that includes UB faculty performance artists, visiting artists, national and regional professionals, and advanced performance students, the group is conducted by leading conductors and composers.

Hailed “Queen of the flute” by New York Magazine, flutist and Buffalo native Carol Wincenc is a past first-prize winner of the Naumburg Solo Flute Competition. She is also the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Flute Association, the National Society of Arts and Letters Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Music and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Brevard Festival and Music Center, and the Manhattan School of Music.
