Two UB faculty members will be featured in the first concert of the new season of “A Musical Feast,” a performance series founded in 2006 by Charles Haupt, retired concertmaster of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.
The concert, titled “Follow Your Bliss — Shared Sounds,” will take place at 4 p.m. Sept. 7 in the Montante Center at Canisius University.
Jonathan Golove, UB associate professor of music, will amplify these themes with a performance of Britten’s FUGA from his first suite for solo cello. Originally written for cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, the FUGA expresses many Russian folk themes with an unmistakable nod to the seashore of Britten’s East Anglian home.
Golove and soprano Tiffany Du Mouchelle, assistant professor of music, will present “Changing Light” by Kaija Saariaho for cello and soprano. The short, meditative piece complements the rhythmic action of the sea with soulful reflection on the meaning of life.
The program also will feature “Down to the Seas Again,” a video by Ann C. Colley, SUNY Distinguished Professor emerita at Buffalo State University, with narration that captures the rich soundscape of Colley’s solitary walks along the English seaside around East Anglia, interweaving the crashing waters with the music of Benjamin Britten.
In addition, violinist Charles Castleman and pianist Claudia Hoca will team up to present the Rondo Brilliant for piano and violin by Franz Schubert.
The concert will close with a performance of Julius Eastman’s “Gay Guerilla” by percussionist Stephen Solook, who teaches at Buffalo State.
Tickets — $20 for general admission, $15 for seniors and $5 for students, faculty and staff — are available at the door or can be purchased online.
