Mingus’ dynasty returns to UB

The Mingus Dynasty Septet, which performs exclusively the music of the late jazz master Charles Mingus, who taught at UB in 1971, will visit campus on Nov. 1.

The concert will take place in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, North Campus, immediately following a 7:30 p.m. talk moderated by former Buffalo News music critic Jeff Miers and including Sabu Adeyola, a UB faculty member and Mingus protégé.

The following day, septet members will hold a workshop with UB jazz students from 9-11 a.m. in Lippes Concert Hall. The session is free and open to the public.

Tickets to the concert are $20 and available through Ticketmaster, at the Center for the Arts box office (noon to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays) and at the Slee Hall box office an hour before the concert. All UB students with a valid ID receive one complimentary ticket to this and all Department of Music concerts.

The Mingus Dynasty was the first band that Mingus’ widow, Sue Mingus, organized after the composer/bassist’s death in 1979, collaborating with his own sidemen to honor his life and work.

Although Mingus was an iconic and trailblazing bassist, he always said he was first and foremost a composer. He left behind more than 300 compositions that deserved to be performed, so a band carrying on his music became a natural — if unanticipated — mission. Today, four decades later, the powerful legacy of Mingus music ignites bandstands while new generations of musicians add their individual voices and continue to celebrate and explore this rich and varied musical legacy.

Current performers in the septet are Wayne Escoffery, tenor sax; Brandon Wright, alto sax/flute; Conrad Herwig, trombone; Philip Harper, trumpet; David Kikoski, piano; Boris Kozlov, bass; and Donald Edwards, drums.
