Slee Sinfonietta to premiere works by UB composers

Published March 4, 2025

The Slee Sinfonietta, UB’s professional chamber orchestra in residence, will continue its mission of supporting the work of students in UB’s PhD program in composition with a concert of work by four students composed for the Sinfonietta.

The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. March 11 in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, North Campus.

Tickets are $10. Advance tickets can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com, at the Center for the Arts box office from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, and at the Slee Hall box office an hour before the concert. UB students are entitled to one complimentary ticket — to this and all UB music department concerts — and may pick up their ticket right before the concert.

The program:

  • James Falzone’s dissertation composition, “Ricercar in Sixth-tone Harmony,” features three specially tuned pianos, along with an ensemble of strings and woodwinds.
  • Brian Patrick Caswell’s “Arrow Through the Window” pairs two semi-independent quartets, driven by percussion writing inspired by post-bop jazz.
  • Thomas Little’s “Two Visions of the Prophet Ezekiel.”
  • Will Brobston’s “Sojourn.”

Conducting will be Matthew Chamberlain, a graduate of the Department of Music’s doctoral composition program.

The Slee Sinfonietta is supported by UB’s Robert & Carol Morris Center for 21st Century Music. Cellist Jonathan Golove, associate professor of music, serves as the Sinfonietta’s artistic director.
