“Fitting Room,” an exhibition by San Francisco Bay-area textile artist Maria A. Guzmán Capron that reflects the artist’s deep engagement with cultural hybridity and the tension between the need to fit in and the desire to stand out, opens Oct. 24 in the UB Art Gallery in the Center for the Arts.

The exhibition, which runs through May 20, features Guzmán Capron’s signature tactile wall pieces, as well as new site-specific, moveable curtains and a commissioned large-scale figure welcoming visitors into the space. Each piece is constructed with fabrics that evoke memory, personal history and the many identities we inhabit, giving shape to her exploration of the body as a space of change and transformation.

An opening reception will take place from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 24 in the first-floor gallery. The reception will include an inclusive fashion show at 6:30 p.m., emceed by Soda and featuring a DJ set by Changeo4. In keeping with the exhibition’s themes of transformation and self-expression, the fashion show is open to any participant — designer, stylist, drag performer or anyone who wants to share their unique look.
