UB Art Gallery reopens with ‘Splitting Light’

The UB Art Gallery in the Center for the Arts, which was dark the entire 2014-15 academic year due to the CFA’s ongoing skylight renovation project, will reopen on Sept. 24 with “Splitting Light,” an exhibition of the work of 10 contemporary artists who are engaging with color as a medium within their varied practices.

The opening reception for the exhibition will take place from 5-7 p.m. in the gallery.

The artists in Splitting Light work in many visual formats, including photography, sculpture, video and light installation, textile and painting.

Curator Rachel Adams says she chose works for the exhibition “that insinuate color is not only a perceivable idea, but also a medium in and of itself. Extending beyond the traditional use of color in painting, each artist explores the effect color has on both mood and space, and specifically how color acts as a structural entity.”

The exhibition includes commissioned works by three artists — Shiva Aliabadi, Amanda Browder and Erin Curtis — as well as two offsite projects.

Browder’s “Prismatic Illusions,” a vibrant sculpture created from fabric and constructed by local volunteers, will cover sections of the UB Anderson Gallery from Sept. 10-14 before moving to the Lightwell Gallery in the UB Art Gallery for the opening of “Splitting Light.”

Sam Falls’ “Untitled (Thermochromatic Bench),” a bench made of thermochromatic tiles that shift in color with the temperature changes, will be on display Aug. 17 through March 2016 in the Bansal Atrium of Davis Hall on the North Campus.

Other artists whose work will be exhibited as part of “Splitting Light” are Anna Betbeze, Gabriel Dawe, Nathan Green, John Knuth, David Benjamin Sherry and Hap Tivey. For information on the individual artists’ exhibited work, visit the UB Art Gallery website.

Also on view on the second floor of the gallery will be selections from the Department of Art’s “Senior Thesis 2015 Exhibition” with the work of artists Austin Laughlin, Kelly Magee, Amber Sliter and Susanna Vaupen. The exhibition, which also opens on Sept. 24 and runs through Oct. 24, is curated by Katherine Gaudy, 2015-16 graduate curatorial assistant for the UB Art Galleries and an MFA candidate in the art department.

UB Art Gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free.
