Shibley named one of DesignIntelligence’s ‘25 Most Admired Educators’

Robert Shibley, dean of the School of Architecture and Planning, has been selected among an esteemed class of 25 top educators in architecture and design by DesignIntelligence, an international publication for design leaders.

The 2016 class of education role models was selected with extensive input from thousands of design professionals, academic department heads and students. Also among this year’s “25 Most Admired Educators” are Guy Nordenson of Princeton University, master architect Juhani Pallasmaa and Amale Andraos of Columbia University.

Shibley, who joined the School of Architecture and Planning in 1982, was cited for his service to students through teaching, mentoring and critical practice — work that also has served the school’s host city and region.

“Committed to improving the city of Buffalo through redevelopment, sustainability and public service, Robert Shibley balances teaching, mentoring, master planning for the campus and connecting with the alumni community to foster relationships and opportunities for students,” the DesignIntelligence entry on Shibley notes.

As director of The Urban Design Project at the School of Architecture and Planning — now merged with the UB Regional Institute planning policy center — Shibley has led award-winning planning and urban design efforts underpinning a renaissance for Buffalo and its surrounding region.

His teaching, scholarship and public service also have helped cultivate the school’s “city-as-textbook” teaching model, recently highlighted in The Chronicle of Higher Education.
