New works for percussion and electronics — including some composed specifically for featured performer and UB alumna Patti Cudd — will be the focus of Wednesday’s Black Box Concert.

The free concert, presented by the Lejaren Hiller Computer Music Studios of the Department of Music and the Technē Institute, will take place at 7:30 p.m. March 9 in the Black Box Theater in the Center for the Arts, North Campus.

Patti Cudd will perform works for vibraphone, snare drum, and an Afro-Peruvian instrument called the 'cajón' at Wednesday's Black Box Concert.

Cudd, who received a master’s degree from UB and studied with noted percussionist Jan Williams, is a member of the new music ensemble Zeitgeist. She will perform pieces for a wide variety of percussion instruments, including works for the vibraphone, snare drum and the cajón — an Afro-Peruvian instrument.

The concert will feature works by current and former UB faculty and alumni, as well as composers from throughout UB’s history, among them Paul Elwood, Cort Lippe, Barry Moon, Jeff Herriott, Brett Wartchow and Panayiotis Kokoras. Several pieces by Lippe, Moon and Elwood were composed specifically for Cudd.

A professor of music at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and at the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University, Cudd has given concerts and master classes throughout the United States, Thailand, Korea, China, Mexico and Europe. She has worked closely with some of the most innovative composers of our time, including Morton Feldman, Roger Reynolds and Julia Wolfe.
