Feldman’s ‘Triadic Memories’ to open UB concert season

The Department of Music kicks off a full concert season of visiting artist performances, the annual Slee Beethoven String Quartet Cycle, a wide selection of new music performances and concerts by UB’s own esteemed faculty with some special events in September.

The season opens on Sept. 5 with a performance of Morton Feldman’s “Triadic Memories” by pianist Thomas Moore. The concert, commemorating the 30th anniversary of Feldman’s death in 1987, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, North Campus. It is co-sponsored by the Robert & Carol Morris Center for 21st Century Music.

The audience will be seated on stage for the concert by Moore, who has been performing “Triadic Memories” for 30 years. Director of arts and culture in the Office of Institutional Advancement at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Moore is a specialist in new music for the piano, including the work of Feldman, the pioneering composer and UB faculty member.

The piano also will be the featured instrument on Sept. 8, as faculty member Eric Huebner and emeritus professor Stephen Manes present a duo recital at 7:30 p.m. in Lippes Concert Hall.

The program includes two works by Mozart and one by Vigeland, and the pianists will be joined by UB percussionists Tom Kolor and John Bacon for Bartok’s Sonata for two pianos and percussion, Sz. 110.

Ensemble Signal, along with guests from the Slee Sinfonietta, UB’s professional chamber orchestra in residence, will perform Steve Reich’s “Music for 18 Musicians” at 9 p.m. Sept. 19 in Lippes Concert Hall. A seminal masterpiece by the pioneering composer who changed the course of 20th-century music, “Music for 18” has a broad popularity and crossover appeal with audiences of all ages, as well as those interested in rock, pop, classical and world music.

A pre-concert discussion with Brad Lubman and Lauren Radnofsky, co-artistic directors of Ensemble Signal, will begin at 8:15 p.m.

The concert is co-presented by the Center for 21st Century Music.
