New music “dream team” Ensemble Signal will return to UB on Oct. 15 to perform a portrait concert commemorating the late British composer and conductor Oliver Knussen.

The concert, presented by UB’s Center for 21st Century Music, will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, North Campus.

The evening will have special meaning for Signal conductor Brad Lubman, who worked as Knussen’s assistant at the Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music from 1989-94.

Signal will perform four works by Knussen representing different moments in his creative trajectory. “Hums and Songs of Winnie the Pooh,” for voice and ensemble, and “Sonya’s Lullaby,” for piano solo, are earlier works. “Pooh” was written in 1970 — and revised in 1983 — while “Lullaby” was written in 1979.

The other two works, “Secret Psalm,” for violin solo, and “Songs without Voices,” for ensemble, were written at the beginning of the ‘90s, a period in Knussen’s career when more of his time was devoted to conducting.

The concert program also will feature two pieces by composers who were much admired by Knussen: “Triple Duo” by Elliott Carter and “Rain Tree Sketch II” by Toru Takemitsu.

For more information on Knussen and the works that will be performed at UB, visit the Center for 21st Century Music’s blog.

Often described as New York City’s new-music “supergroup,” Ensemble Signal is a flexible group of gifted and innovative young musicians who combine the intimacy of chamber music with the power of a compact orchestra. Its size and instrumentation range from solo to large contemporary ensemble to meet the demands of its diverse repertoire.

Signal performs under the musical direction of Lubman, who founded the group along with co-artistic director Lauren Radnofsky.

The ensemble is a frequent visitor to UB, and held the Creative Arts Initiative’s first residency in 2016.
