The Choir of Gonville & Caius College at the University of Cambridge, one of the U.K.’s leading collegiate choirs, will visit UB Sept. 12-13 to open the Department of Music’s Slee Visiting Artist Series for 2019-20.

The choir will begin its first visit to UB with a free workshop and joint performance with the UB Choir at 6 p.m. Sept. 12 in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, North Campus. The workshop and performance are particularly meaningful for UB choir director Claudia Brown, who studied at Cambridge and is an alumna of the Gonville & Caius College Choir.

The event will serve as both a teaching session and a preview of the choir’s performance the following day in the Slee Visiting Artist Series, which will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Lippes Concert Hall. It will feature the music of English Renaissance composer William Byrd, as well as sacred and secular music of women composers from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Gareth Wilson will conductor the choir, which features organists Luke Fitzgerald and Kyoko Canaway.

The Choir of Gonville & Caisus College has gained a world-reputation with its extensive touring, concerts in both the U.K. and abroad, and CD recordings. The choir is made up of 24 singers and two organists. It was founded at the end of the 19th century as a choir of men and boys by Charles Wood, a celebrated composer of Anglican church music. It later became an exclusively undergraduate male choir. Women joined the choir in 1979.
