Meaney receives NYS-ACCP Researcher of the Year Award

Calvin Meaney, clinical associate professor in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, received the 2019 Researcher of the Year Award from the New York State Chapter of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP).

The NYS-ACCP Researcher of the Year Award recognizes outstanding contributions to the scientific literature of drug therapy and to research applicable to patient care by a pharmacist researcher in New York.

Meaney was recognized Nov. 8 at the NYS-ACCP Annual Fall Clinical Meeting in Schenectady.

“Dr. Meaney embodies the true spirit of excellence in clinical pharmacy research as an emerging pharmacist scientist, and he makes our department and school very proud,” says Brian Tsuji, professor and associate dean of clinical and translational science in the pharmacy school.

Meaney is a clinical pharmacist and scientist in the field of nephrology, which is the study of kidney function and disease. His research focuses on the optimization of drug therapies, including personalization of medications that stimulate red blood cell development in dialysis patients. He was one of the first researchers to identify the antibiotics vancomycin and piperacillin-tazobactam as toxic to the kidneys.

He earned a doctorate in pharmacy from UB.
