The Department of Music’s Slee Visiting Artist Series continues this weekend with a program by the renowned Dover Quartet titled “Novelty Through Revisitation.”

The concert, the fourth in this season’s Slee series, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19 in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, North Campus.

The quartet will conduct a master class, which is free and open to the public, earlier that day from 10 a.m. to noon in Lippes Concert Hall.

The program for Friday night’s concert:

Zemlinsky: Quartet No. 1 in A Major, Op. 4.

Tania León: Cuarteto No. 2.

Brahms: Quartet No. 2 in A minor, Op. 51, No. 1.

The title and construction of the Dover’s concert program reflects the fact that the musicians are turning to familiar pieces of music and making something fresh and new. In the Brahms piece, for example, the ensemble reimagines the famous opening of Mozart’s D minor quartet K. 421, transforming it into a romantic period masterpiece.

Tickets for the concert are available through a variety of outlets at the following pricing structure:

UB faculty, staff, alumni, seniors and non-UB students

$10 plus $2.40 fee at www.ticketmaster.com (up to 90 minutes prior to concert time).

$14 in person at the Center for the Arts (noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday).

$18 at the door (one hour before concert time).

UB students are admitted free with ID.

General public

$15 plus approximately $2.55 fee at www.ticketmaster.com (up to 90 minutes prior to concert time).

$19 in person at the Center for the Arts (noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday).

$23 at the door (one hour before concert time).

Note that in addition to the individual transaction fee outlined above, TicketMaster also adds a $2order charge to every order, whether one ticket or multiple tickets are being purchased in that order.

All spectators at on-campus concerts must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination and wear masks inside Slee Hall. A vaccination card, a photo of a vaccination card, an Excelsior Pass or a digital vaccine card are all acceptable. Attendees should be prepared to show photo ID as well.

Dubbed “the next Guarneri Quartet” by The Chicago Tribune and “the young American string quartet of the moment” by the New Yorker, the Dover Quartet catapulted to international stardom in 2013 following a stunning sweep of all prizes at the Banff Competition. The ensemble — featuring Joel Link and Bryan Lee, violin; Milena Pajaro-Van De Stadt, viola; and Camden Shaw, cello — has since become one of the most in-demand ensembles in the world.

In addition to its faculty role as the inaugural Penelope P. Watkins Ensemble in Residence at the Curtis Institute of Music, the Dover holds residencies with the Kennedy Center, Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University, Artosphere, and the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival.

Among the group’s honors are the Avery Fisher Career Grant, Chamber Music America’s Cleveland Quartet Award and Lincoln Center’s Hunt Family Award. The Dover Quartet has won grand and first prizes at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition and fourth prize at the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition.
