The program:

Schubert: Piano Trio in E-flat Major, Op. 100

Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67

Earlier that day, the trio — Jesse Mills, violin; Ole Akahoshi, cello; and Rieko Aizawa, piano— will present a string/chamber music master class from 10 a.m. to noon in Lippes Concert Hall. The class is free and open to the public.

Called “the most compelling American group to come on the scene” by The New Yorker, the Horszowski Trio has quickly become a vital force in the international chamber music world.

The trio takes its inspiration from the musicianship, integrity and humanity of the preeminent pianist Mieczysław Horszowski (1892–1993); the ensemble’s pianist, Rieko Aizawa, was Horszowski’s last pupil at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia.

The ensemble’s repertoire includes works by many of the composers with whom Horszowski had personal interaction, including Gabriel Fauré, Enrique Granados, Bohuslav Martinů, Maurice Ravel, Camille Saint-Saëns and Heitor Villa-Lobos.

Since its debut performance in New York City in 2011, the trio has toured extensively throughout North America, Europe, the Far East and India, traversing the extensive oeuvre of traditional piano trio repertoire and introducing audiences to new music they have commissioned and premiered.

Based in New York City, the Horszowski Trio is the ensemble-in-residence at the Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and of the Leschetizky Association in New York City.
