In many ways, 2023 could be seen as a year of significant growth for the university. For instance, UB’s sponsored research expenditures rose 16% from the previous year, to $232 million, validating the deepening impact of UB’s disciplinary expertise.
In fact, the year began with an announcement, just 10 days in, that UB was awarded a five-year, $20 million grant by the National Science Foundation to establish the National AI Institute for Exceptional Education to develop artificial intelligence systems that identify and assist children with speech and/or language processing challenges. It was one of the largest federal research grants ever received by UB, New York’s flagship university.
As a sign of its commitment to research and creative activity growth, UB welcomed 154 new full-time faculty to campus at the start of the fall semester in what is believed to be the largest cohort of new faculty at UB since it joined SUNY in the 1960s.
And, at his State of the University address in October, President Satish K. Tripathi announced that UB had raised more than $1 billion through the comprehensive fundraising effort known as “Boldly Buffalo.”
2023 proved that UB is indeed a university experiencing the tremendous growth indicative of a flagship. Through it all, members of the university community continued to demonstrate the “True Blue” spirit that captures what UB is all about.
University Communications photographers Douglas Levere and Meredith Forrest Kulwicki were there to document many of these moments. The pair completed nearly 500 assignments, with nearly 8,000 edited images being uploaded to the university’s photo database.
This collection highlights just some of the most memorable images Levere and Forrest Kulwicki created in 2023.
