  • Taughrin named to "30 Under Thirty" list

    Ryan Taughrin, admission and student services coordinator in the Graduate School of Education, has been named a Business First “30 Under Thirty” honoree.

    The annual list recognizes Western New Yorkers in the early stages of their careers who are achieving at high levels at work and in the community.

    The winners will be recognized during a ceremony being held on Aug. 20.

  • Salamone awarded Achenbach Medal

    Salvatore Salamone, assistant professor of civil engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, has been awarded the 2014 Achenbach Medal.

    Presented by the International Workshop on Structural Health Monitoring, the award recognizes a young investigator who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of structural health monitoring. This includes the monitoring of bridges, pipelines, buildings and other infrastructure.

    To be eligible for the international award, one must be a young researcher within 10 years of receiving a PhD.

    A native of Italy, Salamone joined UB in 2010 after earning his PhD at the University of Palermo and conducting postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Diego.

    The medal is named in honor of Jan Achenbach, professor emeritus (Walter P. Murphy Professor and Distinguished McCormick School Professor) at Northwestern University.

  • Colón to speak at South Korean conference

    Luis Colón, professor of chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences, is one of two plenary speakers at KOFAS 2014, an international scientific conference in South Korea.

    The event, which takes place June 11-13, is organized by The Korean Federation of Analytical Science and Technology, and other groups.

    Colón will deliver a lecture titled “Carbon-based nanoparticles and chromatography.”

    A UB faculty member since 1993, Colón is an analytical chemist whose research focuses on chemical analysis at the micro- and nanoscales, the development of new materials for chemical separations, environmental chemistry and bioanalytical chemistry, and other areas.

  • UB receives 8 Excalibur Awards

    UB has received six Gold Excalibur Awards and two Silver Excalibur Awards from the Buffalo-Niagara Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, the most prestigious awards given for communications and marketing excellence in the Buffalo-Niagara region.

    The Excalibur Awards recognize strategic marketing and communications initiatives that demonstrate excellence in research, planning, execution and results. The eight awards were the most received by any organization in Western New York and the most ever awarded to UB in one year.

    University Communications team members and communicators from the Office of Development and Alumni Communications, the School of Management and the Research Institute on Addictions were awarded gold or silver for the following initiatives:

    • "Seven Days Until Obama: A University Gears Up for a Historic Visit from a Sitting President.”
    • “A Winter in Snowy Buffalo — Marketing the New Winter Session at the University at Buffalo.”
    • “Science and You: A Media Relations Team Shows the Human Impact of  University Research.”
    • “Bringing ‘UB Today’ to ‘AtBuffalo.’”
    • “Drinking and Divorce Research Garners Worldwide Media Attention.”
    • “Buffalo Business Magazine.”
    • “Media Relations for Faculty Research on ‘Why Bullies Thrive at Work.’”
    • “Alumni Share the Alumnicity.”
