The SUNY Board of Trustees has named D. Bruce Johnstone chancellor emeritus, a title conferred to a past chancellor of the system for just the fourth time in SUNY history.

The appointment was made at the board’s meeting on Jan. 14.

Johnstone, SUNY Distinguished Service Professor of Higher and Comparative Education Emeritus at UB, was SUNY chancellor from 1988-94; he previously served as president of SUNY Buffalo State from 1979-88.

“Chancellor Johnstone provided remarkable and visionary leadership for SUNY and he remains an incredible asset to us today, as a member of the board of directors of the Research Foundation for SUNY and a distinguished service professor,” said board Chair H. Carl McCall. “We are pleased to recognize his outstanding service with this distinction.”

Johnstone has written and edited more than 125 books, monographs, articles and book chapters, and is best known for his works on the financial condition of higher education, the concept of learning productivity, student financial assistance policy, system governance and international comparative higher education finance. His most recent book, with Pamela Marcucci, is “Financing Higher Education Worldwide: Who Pays? Who Should Pay?” published by Johns Hopkins Press in 2010.

He continues to direct the International Comparative Higher Education Finance and Accessibility Project and has been a speaker at many international conferences and a World Bank consultant on higher education reform projects in Morocco, Romania, the United Arab Emirates, Kenya, and the Organization of East Caribbean States.

The Office of Development Communications received two awards from the CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) District II Accolades Awards Program.Judges reviewed work in 37 categories.

UB’s Circle of Visionaries brochure produced for the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences received a Gold Award in the development/fundraising publications category.

“This brochure encourages targeted prospects to make gifts at the leadership level to the new School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences’ building campaign,” says Ann Brown, senior director of development communications.

The brochure was designed by UB’s Office of University Communications.

In the fundraising/development website category, UB’s Giving website received a Silver Award. The site has received an Accolades Award for three years in a row.

"Since this site launched in 2011, it has evolved into a highly dynamic and engaging overview of philanthropy at UB, with destinations customized for UB schools and programs,” Brown says. “The site also enhances opportunities for online giving.”

Awards will be presented at the annual CASE District II conference being held in February in Baltimore.

CASE is a professional association serving educational institutions and the advancement professionals who work on their behalf in alumni relations, communications, development, marketing and allied areas around the world.

Steven J. Fliesler, Meyer H. Riwchun Endowed Chair and professor of ophthalmology, has been chosen as an Association for Research in Vision Ophthalmology (ARVO) 2014 gold fellow.

The title of ARVO fellow is an honor established to recognize current ARVO members for their individual accomplishments, leadership and contributions to the association, the world’s leading eye and vision research organization.

Eligibility for the fellow designation is determined by a point system established by the ARVO board; members are awarded points based on such things as committee service, editorial board service and elected office.

There are two levels of ARVO fellows: silver fellows, who have earned a minimum of 50 points, and gold fellows, who have earned at least 60 points.

Gold fellows represent the top 1 percent of ARVO’s nearly 13,000 members from more than 80 countries.

Fliesler, who currently serves as president of the International Society for Eye Research and chairs ARVO’s retinal cell biology section and publications committee, was named a silver fellow of ARVO’s inaugural 2009 class of fellows.

He will be inducted as a gold fellow during the 2014 ARVO annual meeting being held in May in Orlando.

Marianthi Markatou, professor of biostatistics and biomedical informatics and assistant director of UB’s Institute for Healthcare Informatics, will speak at a plenary session at the 37th annual Midwest Biopharmaceutical Statistics Workshop being held in May at Ball State University.

Markatou’s talk is titled “Lessons learned from the OMOP and Sentinel Experiments: Is there a third way to addressing the safety of medical products?”
