Adam J. Pawlowski, network engineer with UBIT, died unexpectedly on July 11. He was 37.

A UBIT staff member for 16 years — 18 including his time as a student assistant — Pawlowski had a profound impact on the institution and leaves an indelible mark on his colleagues.

Pawlowski began his full-time career at UB in 2008 as a unified communication systems technician, focusing on voice and data communications systems. In 2015, he became a communication engineer, working on supporting and developing the VoIP telephony enterprise system. In 2022, Pawlowski took on the role of network engineer, where he focused on network enterprise systems, facilities construction and rehab projects, including the Crosby Hall renovation and the National AI Institute. Throughout his years in UBIT, Pawlowski was known for his compassion, patience, zest for life and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge.

Pawlowski’s colleagues remember him for his work ethic, drive to do the job right and his ability to solve problems. As one co-worker said, “he was our technical rock star.”

Pawlowski was also remembered for his humor. He enjoyed playing funny pranks on co-workers and started “The Bad Movie Lunch Club,” which involved watching and rating a box set of old, black-and-white, B movies during lunch hours. Even after the pandemic hit, Pawlowski kept the club together through virtual watch sessions that were sometimes paired with a virtual happy hour on Fridays after 5 p.m. According to colleagues, he was truly a “joy to work and socialize with.”

In addition to his work at UB, Pawlowski was an avid HAM radio operator, enjoyed outdoor activities and volunteered to assist with the Ride for Roswell for the past 16 years.
