Members of the UB community now have another transportation alternative to help lessen the pain at the gas pump, decrease the number of single-occupancy vehicles on campus and on Western New York roads, and reduce our carbon footprints.
UB Parking & Transportation Services is participating in the Good Going WNY ridesharing program, created by the Greater Buffalo-Niagara Regional Transportation Council. Good Going WNY is free and open to all UB faculty, staff and students, and UB affiliates.
“Good Going WNY and systems like it have been introduced successfully around the country. We want to make it part of the UB culture,” says Dennis R. Black, vice president for student affairs.
“A community as large as ours can reduce pounds of CO2 emissions each year. The more transportation alternatives UB can offer, the better it is for us all,” notes Maria Wallace, director of parking and transportation services.
To enroll, users visit goodgoingwny.com and set up an account, selecting UB as their employer and indicating their commuting preferences. Once enrolled, users get immediate access to other ridesharers from all three UB campuses or from outside UB.
The Web site offers information on public transit (Metro bus/rail), park-and-ride, and bicycling, as well as CommuteTrack, a tool that enables users to input their commuted mileage and keep a running tally of money saved, emissions reduced and calories burned. Good Going WNY also is developing an online “ride board” to facilitate carpooling for students traveling over breaks. Tips on safe and productive carpooling also are included.
To encourage ridesharing and the use of the CommuteTrack option, Parking and Transportation Services each semester will randomly award one Trek bicycle and other prizes to UB registrants who share their commuter logs on goodgoingwny.com. Winners will be notified by email.
UUP members may self-nominate for awards
UB employees represented by United University Professions may self-nominate for this year’s discretionary awards by forwarding their nominations to their department chair or director no later than Sept. 5.
Employees may submit their self-nomination in the form of a memorandum outlining their rationale for the request and may include attachments that support the request. There is no required form for this process.
The 2007-11 contract agreement between New York state and UUP provides for distribution of a 1-percent discretionary pool in 2008. The discretionary salary increases will be paid this fall.
