Six teams receive IRDF awards

Six research teams have been awarded seed grants in the latest round of funding from the UB 2020 Interdisciplinary Research Development Fund (IRDF).

The IRDF is one of several programs created by Jorge V. José, vice president for research, to encourage and enable increased research and scholarly activity among university faculty and staff.

The goal of the IRDF is to encourage collaboration among faculty across disciplines for new research projects that ultimately will attract external grant support. Proposals must be within the areas of strategic strength identified by the UB 2020 strategic planning process.

The projects receiving funding during the November 2008 funding cycle are:

• “Nanosensers for Neurotransmitter Detection”: Frank V. Bright, Chemistry, College of Arts and Sciences, corresponding investigator; Mark Swihart, Chemical and Biological Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, co-investigator.

• “Computational Identification of Transcription Factor Binding Sites”: Marc S. Halfon, Biochemistry, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, corresponding investigator; Michael Buck, Biochemistry, and Song Liu, Biostatistics, School of Public Health and Health Professions, co-investigators.

• “Frank Lloyd Wright's Buffalo Venture”: Sandra Olsen, UB Art Galleries, CAS, corresponding investigator; John F. Quinan, Visual Studies, CAS; Brian Carter, Architecture, School of Architecture and Planning; and John Edens, University Archives, University Libraries, co-investigators.

• “Modulating Physiological Response with Novel GPCR Ligands”: Sheldon Park, Chemical and Biological Engineering, SEAS, corresponding investigator; Derek Daniels, Psychology, CAS, co-investigator.

• “Extending a Preservation Archive through a Social Network”: Michalis Petropoulos, Computer Science and Engineering, SEAS, corresponding investigator; Thomas Slomka, Digital Library Center, University Libraries, co-investigator.

• “Micro RNA Regulation of ABC Membrane Transporters”: Aiming Yu, Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, corresponding investigator; Zihua Hu, Center for Computational Research, New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences, and Hua Zhao, Cancer Prevention and Control, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, co-investigators.
