Papa Jake’s Saloon (1672 Elmwood Ave., Buffalo) is my choice for a Friday fish fry. Their fresh-cut fries are a perfect complement to the fish, and they have plenty on the menu for non-fish eaters.

The Deer Head Inn (2683 Clinton St., West Seneca) is great, as long as the stuffed deer and squirrels don’t freak you out too much as they stare at you while you’re eating. Connor’s Restaurant (3465 Seneca St., West Seneca) is good, too.

I have tried many, but it is tough to beat the Wegmans fish fry at the store on Sheridan Drive at Evans Street in Amherst. But then, there may be unexplored gems out there!
