Volunteers sought for Brush Up Buffalo
UB will launch its inaugural UB Community Service Day on June 20 by participating in Brush Up Buffalo 2009. All faculty, staff, students and alumni are encouraged to volunteer.
Founded in 1996, Brush Up Buffalo is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization that organizes an annual event to repaint about 10 to 15 low-income, single-family, owner-occupied homes and revitalize city neighborhoods. This year’s event will take place in the University District, home to the UB South Campus. UB is a key sponsor of Brush Up Buffalo 2009.
Those interested in participating should click here to register (click on the "volunteer" button; if you want to work with other UB volunteeers or friends, indicate that on the form). Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. The event lasts about 4 hours, with breakfast and lunch included; supplies are provided and no painting experience required.
Volunteers will meet at 7:30 a.m. at the South Campus. Park in the Diefendorf Lot. Buses will transport participants to and from houses.
Marchers sought for Buffalo Pride Parade
UB faculty, staff, students, alumni, retirees and their families are invited to join the UB LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) & Ally Staff Faculty Network in marching in Sunday’s Buffalo Pride Parade.
The parade starts at 1 p.m. in the parking area in front of Kleinhans Music Hall, travels north on Elmwood Avenue and ends at Bidwell Park.
Marchers should gather at Kleinhans between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Food and beverages will be provided at the line-up site.
Those interested in participating should contact Jim Bowman.
Volunteers sought for Taste of Asia
Wellness Education Services and Counseling Services is looking for UB faculty, staff and students who can demonstrate Japanese or Korean cooking for “Taste of Asia,” a cultural event being held on Friday afternoons during July.
The event, to be held from 1-3 p.m. in Goodyear X, South Campus, is designed to demonstrate and celebrate cultures by inviting students to learn cultural cooking, gather for tea and have fun with cultural games, performances and crafts.
Volunteers are being sought to demonstrate Korean cooking on July 17 or Japanese cooking on July 24.
Indian culture will be the focus on July 10, and Chinese culture will be highlighted on July 31.
An ideal demonstration might feature a light summer food, such as an appetizer, salad, dessert or finger food, that is easy to prepare and not too messy to cook.
Individuals or groups also are being sought to do a cultural performance or presentation for Indian and Korean days and to lead cultural games or crafting for Indian and Chinese days.
Anyone with ideas or suggestions, or is interested in volunteering, should contact Xuhua Qin at xuhuaqin@buffalo.edu or 645-2720; Anna Peryea at acperyea@buffalo.edu or 829-3316, ext. 205; or Janice Cochrane at jcochran@buffalo.edu or 645-2720, ext. 4.
