  • Police officers to participate in bike ride

UB Police Officers Dale Hohl and Amy Pedlow are geared up and ready to hop on their bikes again this year to raise money for families of police officers killed in the line of duty and to continue to honor the victims of the 9/11 attacks.

“The ride is an opportunity for Amy and me to represent UB and Western New York while raising money for something we care very deeply about,” said Hohl, who is also a volunteer firefighter.

This year’s four-day, 260-mile bike ride starts in Boston, Mass., on Sept. 11 and ends at Ground Zero in New York City on Sept. 14. Among the 170 police officers and EMS personnel participating, Hohl and Pedlow are the only officers from Western New York. They raised $5,000 in last year’s ride and set a high standard for other riders, according to event organizers.

This year, Hohl and Pedlow hope to double the amount they raise by selling $5 raffle tickets for the chance to win a 42” Sony TV or a 19” Audiovox TV/DVD player. The duo will be selling the raffle tickets and Tour de Force baseball hats on their lunch hour in the Student Union, North Campus.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the effort can do so through the ride’s Web site. Online contributions to the Hohl and Pedlow team are automatically entered into the TV raffle if contact information is provided. Winners will be announced Aug. 28.

  • UB in clash of the concrete titans

In a test of think or swim, civil engineering students—including a team from UB—will use “concrete” determination to keep their dreams afloat at the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) National Concrete Canoe Competition, being held this weekend at the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa.

Joining UB in the contest will be teams from 21 other colleges and universities, among them University of California-Berkeley, Clemson University, the University of Florida and the University of Washington.

The teams will match wits and skills in four categories—the aesthetics and structural integrity of their canoe; a technical design paper highlighting their planning, development, testing and construction; an academic presentation covering their canoe’s design, construction, racing ability and other innovative features; and, of course, the performance of the canoe and its paddlers in five different races—men’s and women’s slalom/endurance races and men’s, women’s and co-ed sprint races. Performance in each of the four categories accounts for 25 percent of a team’s total score.
