Word of Mouth

Where is your favorite bit of nature—wild area, park or garden?

  • Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve (77 Honorine Drive, off Como Park Boulevard) in Depew, run by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, is the best place to experience nature in suburbia. You feel like you are not in the area at all, but out in the wilderness. There are guided tours—I happen to be a guide—and many programs and activities.

  • Chestnut Ridge Park (6121 Chestnut Ridge Road, Orchard Park). We go there year-round. We go sledding there every winter. And when it’s not snowing, it’s a great place for a picnic or a hike down to see the eternal flame.

  • I love Allegany State Park, but if I don’t want to travel that far, I’ll go Tifft Nature Preserve (1200 Fuhrmann Blvd., Buffalo).

My backyard garden, just wish there weren't as many bunnies using the garden as a salad bar this summer.
