U.S. News rankings spell good news for UB in several categories
UB earned good marks in several categories in the 2010 “best colleges” rankings published last week by U.S. News and World Report.
UB placed in the top tier of national universities, ranking 60th among the best public universities and 121st overall among 265 universities reviewed. UB ranked No. 1 among all public universities in the largest proportion of undergraduate students who are international.
Meanwhile, the UB School of Management’s undergraduate business program made an impressive jump to No. 57, from No. 78 last year, among 183 top-tier schools and 550 accredited business schools. It is the highest ranked business program in SUNY.
“Strengthening the undergraduate program has been one of our top priorities since I joined the School of Management a year ago,” says School of Management Dean Arjang Assad. “And while these rankings are not always reliable, we’ll take it as good news when they confirm something we’ve been working on.”
The UB School of Engineering and Applied Sciences also did well again in the ranking, placing No. 64 this year among the nation's best undergraduate engineering programs at doctoral universities. UB Engineering tied with Stony Brook as SUNY’s top-ranked undergraduate engineering program.
In the ranking of national universities, UB made improvements in graduation rate and percentage of freshmen who were in the top 10 percent of their high school class, according to U.S. News’ ranking methodology.
“Our success in these areas indicates that we are increasingly attracting highly ambitious students who are eager to take full advantage of UB’s innovative and research-oriented academic and experiential programs,” says Provost Satish K. Tripathi. “Moreover, our success in cultivating our students’ potential is evidenced by the many UB students who, over the past years, have received national recognition for their stellar academic and scholarly achievements
“The fact that UB ranks first among all public universities as having the highest proportion of international students speaks very highly of UB’s vast international reputation. And, just as important, it speaks highly of UB as a community that embraces diverse cultural, social, intellectual and political exchange.”
