Fabbriciani, JACK Quartet to perform
The JACK Quartet has established a reputation for high-energy performances.
The Department of Music and the Robert and Carol Morris Center for 21st Century Music are bringing renowned musicians Roberto Fabbriciani and the JACK Quartet to UB this month for performances and related educational activities.
Fabbriciani will perform works for solo flute and tape (recorded accompaniment) at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 9 in Baird Recital Hall, 250 Baird Hall, North Campus, as part of the Slee/Visiting Artist Series.
While at UB, Fabbriciani, who had to cancel a scheduled performance last year due to visa issues, will conduct a composer workshop on extended playing techniques on Oct. 7 and a flute master class on Oct. 8.
The workshop will be held at 3:30 p.m. in Baird Recital Hall; the master class is set for 7 p.m. in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, North Campus. Both are free and open to the public.
The JACK Quartet, which has established a reputation for giving high-energy performances of today’s most demanding works for string quartet, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 13 in Baird Recital Hall. The group will conduct a composer workshop at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 14, also in Baird Recital Hall. The workshop is free and open to the public.
The Arezzo-born Fabbriciani may be best known for the new flute technique he developed that extends the capabilities of the instrument, especially the sound spectrum. As a young man, he joined the Orchestra of the Florence Maggio Musicale and La Scala, Milan, and later worked with some of the greatest composers of the 20th century, many of whom devoted a substantial part of their work to him. Among them are Sylvano Bussotti, John Cage, Aldo Clementi, Franco Donatoni, Toshiyuki Hosokawa, Wolfgang Rihm, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Isang Yun. Of the seven pieces of music that Fabbriciani will perform at UB, five were dedicated to him: Clementi's "Fantasia su roBErto FABbriCiAni," Ennio Morricone's "Cadenza," Donatoni's "Midi," Salvatore Sciarrino's "Come vengone prodotti gli incantesimi" and Luigi Nono's "Das atmende klarsein."
In addition to performing, Fabbriciani also teaches at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria.
The JACK Quartet, comprised of violist John Pickford Richards, violinists Ari Streisfeld and Christopher Otto, and cellist Kevin McFarland—JACK coming from the first letter of the members' first names—has performed worldwide, including Carnegie Hall, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Mexico. The quartet has worked closely with many of the world’s foremost composers, including Helmut Lachenmann, Matthias Pintscher and Wolfgang Rihm.
The New York Times called the quartet’s performance of Iannis Xenakis’ complete string quartets one of the “most memorable classical music presentations of 2008.” The group’s UB program will include Xenakis’ Tetoro.
Advanced tickets for performances by both Roberto Fabbriciani and the JACK Quartet are $12 for the general public, $9 for UB faculty/staff/alumni and senior citizens, and $5 for students, and can be purchased at the Slee Hall box office, the Center for the Arts box office and at all Ticketmaster locations, including Ticketmaster.com. Tickets at the door are $20, $15 and $8.
