An editorial appearing in the New England Journal of Medicine entitled “Identifying and Addressing Safety Signal in Clinical Trials” cited the work of Atif Awad, associate professor, Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, School of Public Health and Health Professions, and Peter Bradford, associate professor, Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Their research on the cancer protective activity of dietary phytosterols and other phytonutrients was referenced.
Dennis Black, vice president for student affairs, has been named chairman of the Hilbert College Board of Trustees. A Hilbert trustee since 2001, Black chairs the board’s Executive Committee and previously chaired the presidential search and Ad Hoc Building committees.
Julian L. Ambrus, associate professor of medicine, was elected president of the Catholic Academy of Sciences in the U.S. and was installed at the group's 22nd annual meeting in Washington, D.C. Earlier this year, he received the Laureate Award at the Rochester meeting of the American College of Physicians.
John P. Richard, professor of chemistry, has been chosen to receive the 2009 Jacob F. Schoellkopf Award, which honors an individual in the Niagara Frontier for outstanding work and service in the fields of chemistry or chemical engineering. The award is given by the Western New York section of the American Chemical Society, which has been presenting the medal annually since 1931, making it the oldest of its kind given continuously by the American Chemical Society. Richard was cited for his “outstanding research in the field of physical organic and bio-organic chemistry.”
