‘Go, Tell Michelle’ adapted as play
“Go, Tell Michelle: African American Women’s Letters to the New First Lady,” the book of 100 letters to Michelle Obama edited by two UB staff members, has been adapted as a dramatic production.
“Go, Tell Michelle: The Play” will debut at 7 p.m. Jan. 19 in the Allen Hall Theater, South Campus, on the eve of the first anniversary of the historic inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States. The production will be free and open to the public.
Co-editors Barbara Seals Nevergold and Peggy Brooks-Bertram, both senior educational specialists and co-founders of the Uncrowned Queens Institute for Research and Education on Women at UB, will perform, along with storyteller Karima Amin, in this dramatization by Robert Knopf, professor and chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance.
“Go, Tell Michelle” (SUNY Press, 2009), published shortly after the 2008 election, compiles letters written to Michelle Obama by ordinary women from across the country and the world offering messages of hope and advice for the new First Lady.
Knopf says “Go, Tell Michelle: The Play” is more than a dramatic reading. “It is a montage of lost voices, personal stories and heartfelt emotions unleashed by the tide of history that has swept the nation,” he says.
A second performance will take place the following night in the Frank E. Merriweather Jr. Library. As with the UB program, it will be free and open to the public.
The production is co-sponsored by the Uncrowned Queens Institute and the Department of Theatre and Dance. The Buffalo Teacher’s Federation also is a key sponsor.

Gifted Math Program seeks nominations
The Gifted Math Program is accepting nominations of outstanding sixth-grade mathematics students submitted by schools and parents for its Fall 2010 entering class.
A three-hour battery of tests, including the math section of the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, will be administered in March to about 200 nominees to select students for the 60 available places in the new class.
The program offers advanced mathematics courses, which replace mathematics classes in students’ home schools and are designed to challenge students with high levels of ability. Students in grades seven to 10 study an enriched and accelerated mathematics program; 11th and 12th graders take university-level courses in calculus and linear algebra. They complete four semesters of university-level mathematics as part of the six-year program and may accumulate a total of 22 college credit hours.
Classes meet Mondays and Wednesdays on the North Campus.
The deadline for nominations is Jan. 27. Informational meetings for the families of nominated students and others interested in the program will be held at UB in February.
For more information or to obtain a schedule of informational meetings, contact Anne Szczesny, Gifted Math Program administrator, at 645-4467 or mpmath@buffalo.edu, or visit the program’s Web site.
