I’m a sucker for praise. We spend so much time motivating and praising our children that we forget ourselves. We shouldn’t have to spend money on motivational speakers when words like “keep up the good work” or “well done” can go a long way in between paychecks. An ounce of praise is worth a pound of work!

I appreciate when people offer a heartfelt word of thanks or a note of appreciation. In fact (and don’t tell my boss!), it almost means more to me than a raise!

Although money is an important form of recognition, something equally or even more important is recognition that makes me feel appreciated, respected and valued for the work that I have done. This recognition can take various forms, including a simple thank you from my supervisor, hand-written note (with a copy for my file), being included in decision-making and being offered the opportunity to participate in an important project or serve on an interesting committee.

I’m not one for recognition in front of a large group. If I put extra effort into something, I love to receive written notes. If it’s my supervisor or our VP, I really like the thoughtfulness that goes into it. If it’s from our VP, it feel great and it also tells me that my supervisor took the time to share it. I also like written recognition (article or email). This way, people can acknowledge it if they want to.
