Dennis R. Black, vice president for student affairs, has received the 2010 Fred Turner Award for Outstanding Service from NASPA—Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.

The award recognizes NASPA members with continuous membership in the organization for 10 or more years who have served in a leadership role at the state, regional or national level of NASPA.

The award was presented earlier this month at the organization’s annual conference in Chicago. It is named in honor of a past NASPA president and former senior student affairs officer at the University of Illinois.

“Dennis is the model senior student affairs administrator who is admired by students, emulated by new professionals and highly respected by his peers,” said Gwendolyn Jordan Dungy, executive director of NASPA. “His innovative ideas have been the impetus for many successful programs in NASPA, and the NASPA conference in Boston under his incredible leadership was the most successful in attendance and evaluated most highly for quality.”

Black received bachelor’s and JD degrees from UB, and also studied at the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University Graduate School of Education. An adjunct associate professor in the Graduate School of Education, he edits Campus Legal Briefings newsletter and is the author of several books on higher education legal issues.

He is a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Education.

NASPA—Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education is the leading voice for student affairs administration, policy and practice, and affirms the commitment of the student affairs profession to educating the whole student and integrating student life and learning. With more than 11,000 members at 1,400 campuses, and representing 29 countries, NASPA is the foremost professional association for student affairs administrators, faculty, and graduate and undergraduate students.
