José leaving for Indiana University
Jorge V. José is leaving UB to become system vice president for research at Indiana University.
José, whose appointment is subject to approval of the IU Board of Trustees, has been vice president for research at UB and professor of physics and physiology and biophysics since 2005.
A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, José will be responsible for research development, research compliance and research administration at IU, similar to his responsibilities at UB but for the whole university system
During his time at UB, research expenditures have increased from $259 million in 2005 to $350 million in 2009, an increase of more than 35 percent.
“It is with mixed feelings that I will be leaving my dear UB family, “José said. “I came to UB almost five years ago because I was attracted by what were then the beginnings of the implementation of the interdisciplinary UB 2020 strategic vision.
“Much yet needs to be done,” he added, “but it is clear to me, as President Simpson and Provost Tripathi often remind us, that this is the best possibility—not just for UB, but also for Western New York’s future.”
Prior to his position at UB, José was a distinguished professor and chair of the physics department at Northeastern University. While at Northeastern, José founded the Center for the Interdisciplinary Research on Complex Systems in 1995 and served as the center’s director until 2005.
