I come from a family that loves to cook and eat together. When I was growing up, every Sunday after church my family would get dinner at the former Howard Johnson’s at Delaware and North. My mother and I would always split the same dish—fried clam strips. Also, my mother (who is now 85) has been a fantastic cook over the years. For our birthdays, she would always make me and my three sisters our favorite dish. Mine was goulash. I would ask for it every year! Now my younger daughter makes a wonderful goulash that she learned on her own, and it reminds me of my mom.

The food that reminds me of my mother is cornbread. My mom was from the south and would always make homemade cornbread stuffing at Thanksgiving. It was a sweet addition to the traditional meal. I continue to carry on the tradition of making homemade cornbread, but love to have it with a variety of meals.

The dish that reminds me of my mother is tamales. I grew up in Brooklyn, and my mom would make them every weekend and take them to Red Hook Park to eat while we watched the soccer matches. We would enjoy them ourselves and share them with our soccer team as well.

Coming from a tradional, italian family...mom, Saturday & Sundays...all go together. My mom would start the sauce Saturday night...slowly cooking. Then turn it back on, on Sunday morning...adding homemade meatballs, & pork hocks till the sauce really thickened after a couple of hrs. That afternoon she would boil the water & add macaroni to it. We'd sit down & savor it every Sunday afternoon, with plenty of Romano cheese on top!
