Farmers market open on South Campus
The fourth season of the University Community Farmers Market is under way on the UB South Campus, featuring a variety of new and old vendors and selling fresh food and local products.
The market will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday through Oct. 16 on the Main Street sidewalk at Kenmore Avenue. Attendees can park for free in the Allen, Main and Bailey parking lots on the South Campus, directly behind the market across from the University Plaza.
The market is coordinated by a planning committee and a new market manager this year.
“The University Community Farmer’s Market improves the quality of life in our neighborhood by providing an opportunity to buy healthy fresh produce from local farmers, to support local artisans and to meet our neighbors in a relaxed outdoor environment,” says Gail Willsky, market manager and associate professor of biochemistry, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
This year’s vendors will be selling fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as artisan products. For the first time this year, the market planning committee is inviting individuals to help coordinate the market. Vendor applications also are available.

UB composts Dave Matthews’ trash
UB Green and UB Campus Dining and Shops partnered to compost backstage trash at last week’s Dave Matthews Band concert at Darien Lake Resort.
After organizers of the June 2 show contacted the university for help with managing food waste, UB Green sent Deborah Arent, a student assistant, to the event. There, she gathered 10 buckets of fruit rinds, raw vegetable cuttings, leftovers and biodegradable plates and cups that Campus Dining and Shops later composted at UB.
The effort made sense for Campus Dining and Shops, which has been a leader in promoting sustainable practices at the university, and UB Green, which often partners with outside agencies to advance environmental initiatives on campus and in Western New York.
“We’ve always had a community focus, and Darien Lake is pretty much our big, local concert venue, so it wasn’t a stretch for us to say we wanted to help them out,” says Jim Simon, associate environmental educator for UB Green. “Our Facebook post on the event was one of the most popular Facebook posts that we’ve had in a while. It resonates with a lot of the students, faculty and staff who follow us, because Dave Matthews is a pretty recognized band, and I think a lot of people were like, ‘UB Green helped out Dave Matthews. That’s pretty cool.’
“All the waste that comes through the community every year from these concerts and tours—if one of them is trying to reduce that and we can be a part of that, then we’re all for it,” Simon says.
UB alum named to SUNY Board of Trustees
Joseph W. Belluck, JD ’94, has been appointed to the SUNY Board of Trustees by Gov. David Paterson.
Belluck’s appointment, which is effective July 1 and runs through June 30, 2017, was confirmed last week by the state Senate. He replaces Robert J. Bellafiore, who has served as a trustee since 2005.
A founding partner of the Manhattan law firm of Belluck & Fox LLP, Belluck received a BS in sociology from Binghamton University in 1989 and a JD, magna cum laude, from the UB Law School in 1994. He later served as an adjunct lecturer on mass torts at UB Law. His law firm focuses its work on asbestos, consumer, environmental and defective product litigation.
Belluck previously served as counsel to the New York State attorney general, representing the state in its litigation against the tobacco industry; as a law clerk for Justice Lloyd Doggett of the Texas Supreme Court; and as director of attorney services for Trial Lawyers Care, an organization dedicated to providing free legal assistance to victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Register for Jog for the Jake
The Jog for the Jake 5K road race supporting research initiatives and patient care programs at the Jacobs Neurological Institute—UB's Department of Neurology—will be held on June 20 in Delaware Park.
The event honors the late Lawrence D. Jacobs, a UB faculty member and physician known world-wide for his advances in research and treatment of multiple sclerosis.
In the past five years, Jog for the Jake activities have raised more than $610,000 to help support the neurological conditions researched and treated at the JNI, including MS, epilepsy, stroke, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s disease.
In addition to the 5K run around Delaware Park, the event features several family activities on the Nicholas School Campus including a kids’ dash with individual t-shirts and chocolate medals, bounce houses, children’s art activities presented by the Albright Knox Art Gallery, animal “ambassadors” from the Buffalo Zoo, music and lunch.
Registration for the event is $20 if received by June 11; $25 thereafter. For more information and to register, click here.
