Employees asked to donate school supplies
UB employees are encouraged to donate school supplies as part of a university-wide drive to benefit pre-K through 12 students across the Buffalo Niagara region.
The drive is part of a collaborative effort among local colleges and universities initiated by state Sen. Antoine Thompson.
Donations of such items as paper, pencils, rulers, planners, markers, and folders can be dropped off at dozens of locations on the UB North, South and Downtown campuses through Aug. 23. Click here for a list of collection sites.
The supplies will be distributed to approximately 1,500 families on Sept. 4 at an event coordinated by Thompson’s office.
“This is one of the ways we can support the university’s educational mission and our pre K-12 initiatives by providing young people with the tools they need to have a successful year in school,” says Marsha Henderson, vice president for external affairs.

Shorter retirement window announced
UB classified state employees have a shorter timeframe than expected to retire under Part A of the state’s early retirement incentive, University Human Resources has announced.
The Employees’ Retirement System (ERS) did not accept SUNY’s request to extend the deadline for the Part A incentive to Dec. 31 for classified state (CSEA, PEF, NYSCOPBA, C-82, ALESU, M/C classified) employees. The window to retire under Part A for classified employees is now Aug. 9 through Sept. 30.
To be eligible for this incentive, classified employees must be at least 50 years of age with 10 years of ERS service, or at least 55 years of age with five years of ERS service. The incentive provides up to an additional 36 months of service credit (normal age reductions apply) for ERS members.
Faculty and professional staff represented by United University Professions (UUP) and M/C professional employees who are members of ERS, TRS (Teachers Retirement System) or the SUNY ORP (Optional Retirement Plan) have an open period to retire under Part A from Oct. 3 through Dec. 31.
To be eligible for the Part A incentive, employees must be at least 50 years of age with 10 years of credible service. The incentive provides up to an additional 36 months of service credit (normal age reductions apply) for ERS/TRS members or an additional cash contribution for members of the ORP.
Part B of the state retirement incentive will allow members of ERS or TRS who are between ages 55-61 and who have between 25-29 years of service to retire without the lifetime reduction of their retirement benefit imposed for retiring prior to reaching age 62 or acquiring 30 or more years of service credit. The open period for Part B is July 2 through Sept. 30.
The NYSUT (New York State United Teachers) incentive program is virtually identical to the Part B program, but is open only to employees represented by NYSUT affiliated bargaining units (e.g., UUP). The open period for this program is Oct. 3 to Dec. 31.
Eligible employees must be in active service from Feb. 1, 2010, until the beginning of the open enrollment period.
Employees cannot combine the UB Voluntary Separation Incentive Program with any state early retirement incentive.
